Tile Pile rules
How to play Tile Pile: the rules
Monster tiles lie in a pile, layer on layer. Every monster comes in sets of three, and you can only take a tile with nothing on top of it:
- Only free tiles can be taken. A darker tile has something lying on it. Tap it and it just wiggles.
- Tap a free tile. It hops down to your bench. Monsters of the same kind line up next to each other.
- Three of a kind: Gnatz takes them. The third one completes the set, and the trio flies off the bench.
- Clear the whole pile. When the last tile is gone, the level is done.
That’s the whole game: a triple match puzzle where the order matters. There is no timer and no move limit, so look before you tap.
Free tiles
Which tiles can you take?
A tile is free when nothing from a higher layer touches it, not even a corner. Covered tiles look darker, so you can see at a glance what you can take.
- This tile is stuck. It looks darker, and a tap does nothing.
- Even a corner counts. Tiles sit half a tile apart, so one tile can rest on up to four below it. Every tile touching it from above has to go first.
- Take them, and it lights up. Now it is free and you can tap it.
Higher layers sit a little up and to the left, so you can always see the edges of the tiles underneath. Count them before you tap: a tile resting on four others frees all four when it goes.
The bench
Seven slots on the bench
Every tile you take goes to the bench below the pile. It has seven slots. Matching monsters always line up side by side, so you can see which sets are half done.
- Seven slots on the bench. Every tile you take lands here, next to its own kind. Three of a kind leave.
- Pick at random, and it fills up. With five on the bench, the last slots glow red.
- Full bench: three fly back. The last three tiles you took go back to their spots on the pile, and a star is gone.
A full bench is the one way to go wrong. It costs a star, and the last three tiles you took fly back to where they were, so you can try again from there.
From Normal on
Sleeping tiles hide their monster
From Normal on, some covered tiles are asleep: dark, with a moon on them. You only find out who is under there once nothing lies on top.
- A sleeping tile. Dark, with a moon. You can't see which monster is under there.
- Take what lies on it. It wakes up the moment it is free.
- Now you know who it is. Here it is the third of a set on the bench: one tap and the trio is gone.
Sleepers turn planning into a bit of a guess. Wake them early, and you know what is coming before the bench gets tight.
From Tricky on
Fuse tiles burn down
From Tricky on, one tile has a fuse, and on Devilish two. Its glowing border gets shorter with every tap you make, wherever you tap.
- A fuse tile. The glowing border is its fuse. It burns down a bit with every tap, wherever you tap.
- Orange, then red. The shorter it gets, the redder it glows. It keeps burning on the bench too.
- Trio in time: fuse out. Clear its triple before the border is gone and nothing happens. Too late costs a star.
The fuse is out once its triple is gone. If it burns down first, you lose a star, but the tile stays and the level goes on. Every level leaves enough time if you get to the fuse early.
How to play
Tile Pile in Beasties, step by step
The pile in the middle, the bench below it, the stars and the tiles left on top. Gnatz peeks over the board and grabs every trio.
- The pile, your bench, Gnatz. Tap free tiles in the pile. They land on the bench below, and Gnatz waits above for every trio.
- Tiles left. Under the stars: how many tiles are still on the pile and the bench.
- No timer, no move limit. Take your time. Only a full bench or a burnt fuse costs a star.
- Empty pile: level done. The stars you still have fly into your counter.
Stars
Keep all three stars
Three stars are at stake in every level. Only two things cost one: a full bench and a burnt fuse.
- Three stars at stake. Fill the bench and one is gone. The last three tiles fly back to the pile.
- A burnt fuse costs one too. Its triple wasn't cleared in time. The fuse is out after that, the tile stays.
- All three gone: level lost. One more full bench and it is over.
- Restart: all three back. The same pile from the start. Play it clean and the stars are yours.
Lose all three and the level is lost. Restart puts the whole pile back and gives you all three stars again. There is no undo, so Restart is also the way back after a bad start.

Tile Pile strategy
Tile matching tips for three stars
Any order gets the pile cleared if the bench never fills up. These four habits keep it that way.
Tip 1
Finish a set before you start one
A pair on the bench blocks two slots until the third one comes. If the third is free, take it now.
- A pair on the bench. Two slots are taken until the third one comes.
- The third is free: take it now. Don't start a new set while you can finish one.
- Two slots back. The trio is gone and the bench has room again.
Tip 2
Dig where the pile is deep
Some tiles hold up three or four others. Take those first and you have more to choose from.
- This tile holds up a lot. Several tiles below it are stuck, sleepers among them.
- Take it first. One tap frees them all at once, and the sleepers wake up.
- More to choose from. The more free tiles you see, the easier it is to find the third one.
Tip 3
Keep two slots free
With five on the bench, only take tiles that finish a set. A stranger now can cost you a star.
- Five on the bench. Two slots left, and they glow red.
- No new monsters now. A tile that matches nothing would take a slot for nothing. Look for one that finishes a set.
- Trio: room again. Three slots free in one tap.
Tip 4
Deal with the fuse first
Find the fuse tile and two more of its kind at the start, and clear that set before anything else.
- Spot the fuse at the start. It starts burning with your first tap.
- Dig out its set first. Find two more of its kind and take what lies on them.
- Trio gone, worry gone. With the fuse out of the way, the rest of the pile has no clock.
Bench full anyway? It costs a star, but the three tiles go back to their spots, so nothing is lost for good. Gone wrong early? Restart is free and gives you all three stars back.
Solutions
Stuck on a level?
Every level has its own solution page, free and Pro. You see the pile and a solution one tap at a time, without a full bench and with all three stars.

FAQ
Tile Pile questions, short answers
What is the goal in Tile Pile?
Clear the whole pile. Tap free tiles to move them to your bench, and every time three of the same monster meet there, Gnatz takes them. When no tile is left, the level is done.
Can I look up the rules during a round?
Yes. Tap the gear at the top left of the round: Settings open, and their Game guide row takes you straight to the rules of this game, what is special in it and how the stars work. You also find the guide behind the ? on the level start and in Settings on the home screen.
Which tiles can I tap?
Only free ones: tiles with nothing from a higher layer on them, not even a corner. Covered tiles look darker, and tapping one only makes it wiggle.
How many tiles fit on the bench?
Seven. Matching monsters line up next to each other, and three of a kind leave the bench at once.
What happens when the bench is full?
You lose a star, and the last three tiles you took fly back to their spots in the pile. Then you carry on from there.
What are sleeping tiles?
Covered tiles that hide their monster, from Normal on. They are dark with a moon, and the monster shows as soon as nothing lies on the tile.
How do fuse tiles work?
A fuse tile has a glowing border that burns down a little with every tap. Clear its triple before the border is gone and nothing happens. If it burns down first, you lose a star. Fuses show up from Tricky on, two of them on Devilish.
How do I keep all three stars?
Never fill the bench and clear every fuse tile’s triple in time. Nothing else costs a star: there is no timer and no move limit.
Is there an undo?
No. If a level goes wrong, Restart puts the whole pile back and gives you all three stars again.
Can I play Tile Pile offline?
Yes. Tile Pile and every other game in Beasties work without an internet connection, and there are no ads.
Can every level be solved?
Yes. Every pile is built from a clearing order that never fills the bench and never lets a fuse burn. The solutions on this site show that order, tap by tap.
How is Tile Pile different from mahjong solitaire?
Both are tile matching games with stacked layers. In mahjong solitaire you match pairs straight off the board. In Tile Pile you collect tiles on a bench and need three of a kind, so the bench is what you plan around.
Is level 37 the same for everyone?
Yes. The levels are fixed and come with the app: the same piles in the same order for every player. New levels are only added at the end.
